Prohibition during menstruation Menstruation or menstruation is the process of bleeding from the vagina which is commonly experienced by women every month.
In Islam there are restrictions on worship for a woman who is menstruating or postpartum, women who are menstruating or postpartum are considered to have hadas or are in an impure condition so that they are not allowed to perform certain worship.
Here are the prohibitions during menstruation for women
1. Salat
In Islam it is not permissible for a woman to pray while she is menstruating.
When during menstruation, it means that a woman is in an impure state, while one of the conditions for a valid prayer is that someone is pure from hadas.
“When menstruation comes, leave the prayer,” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).
One day, a woman came and asked Ayesha, “Does one of us have to make up the prayer when he is already clean from menstruation?”
Then Aisyah asked, “Are you a Hururiyyah woman? We used to menstruate at the time of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. He did not order us to change prayers.” (Narrated by Bukhari)
2. Reading and Touching the Quran
In addition to the prohibition of praying, women who are menstruating are not allowed to read the Qur’an.
The Qur’an is a holy book, one must purify oneself first to interact with the Qur’an, therefore it is not permissible for menstruating women who are not in a holy state to read and touch the Qur’an.
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. said,
“Junub people and menstruating women are not allowed to read anything from the Koran,” (HR. Tirmidhi)
3. Fasting
Apart from being prohibited from praying, women who are menstruating and postpartum are not allowed to fast, either obligatory or sunnah fasting.
There is a hadith that says,
“We were also menstruating, so we were ordered to make up the fast and not ordered to make up the prayer” (HR. Muslim)
From the above hadith, it is stated that women who do not fast are obligatory because they are late for menstruation, they are obliged to replace it in the future.
4. Having husband and wife
Allah explains in the QS Al-Baqarah: 222
“They ask you about menstruation. Say: “Menstruation is an impurity”. Therefore, keep away from women during menstruation; and do not approach them until they are holy. When they are pure, then mix them where Allah has commanded you. Verily, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.”
Based on the meaning of the Qur’anic verse above, when a woman is menstruating, it is forbidden to have sexual relations.
“Whoever has intercourse with a menstruating woman or has intercourse with a woman in her anus, then he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)
In the opinion of Sheikh Albani, it is permissible for him to make out with a woman who is menstruating other than jima’. This is based on the words of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.
“Do as you wish (towards menstruating women) other than jima ‘” (HR. Muslim)
5. Tawaf
Menstruating or postpartum women are not allowed to perform tawaf to surround the Kaaba, this is explained in the hadith.
The Messenger of Allah said to Ayesha when she was performing Hajj while she was menstruating.
“Do everything that a pilgrim does except perform tawaf at the Kaaba until you are holy again,” (Bukhari and Muslim).”
