School accreditation can be interpreted as a process of evaluating and assessing the quality of an institution carried out by a team of experts called assessors based on predetermined quality standards.

Accreditation is carried out at the direction of an independent accreditation body outside the institution, and the result will be an acknowledgment that the assessed institution has complied and complied with standard specified quality.

From the results of the accreditation, an institution has been deemed fit to operate and implement all of its programs. School accreditation is also a process of continuous evaluation and assessment of the appropriateness of an institution.

So school accreditation can also be interpreted as a process of evaluating and assessing the quality and quality carried out by the education provider. Schools that have been specifically accredited will automatically be able to organize education as well as learning and teaching activities in accordance with national education standards to produce the nation’s next generation of quality and professionals.

Meanwhile, the process of implementing school accreditation is carried out by a special agency, namely; TIRE S/M. National Accreditation Board for Schools/Madrasah (BAN S/M). BAN-S/M is an independent evaluation body that determines the feasibility of formal education programs and units for primary and secondary education by referring to the National Education Standards as mandated in the law and becoming an official body of the government under the Ministry of Education and Culture. Culture.

Based on Permendikbud Number 59 of 2012 (article 1 paragraph 2) the National Accreditation Board for Schools/Madrasah is an independent evaluation body that determines the feasibility of programs and educational units for formal primary and secondary education levels with reference to national education standards so that the quality of schools and graduates is recognized nationally. .

Furthermore, in Article 1 paragraph 6 it is explained that school or madrasa accreditation is a form of formal education unit which includes:

  • Elementary School (SD);
  • Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI);
  • Junior High School (SMP);
  • Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs);
  • High School (SMA);
  • Madrasah Aliyah (MA);
  • Vocational High School (SMK);
  • Vocational Madrasah Aliyah (MAK);
  • Special Schools (SLB); and
  • Other equivalent formal education units.

School and Madrasah Accreditation Terms and Conditions

Provisions for accreditation of formal education programs or units include:

School accreditation in SD/MI/SDLB, SMP/MTs/SMPLB, and SMA/MA/SMALB applies to educational units.

School accreditation in SMK/MAK is applied to skill programs according to the name of the expertise program in Permendiknas Number 40 of 2008 concerning Standards for Vocational Facilities. For expertise programs that have more than one skill competency, accreditation is still carried out on expertise programs by assessing all skill competencies. This is so that the accreditation process can run independently, professionally and without any obstacles.

School Accreditation Proposal Terms

The school/madrasah that proposes to be accredited must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a decision letter for the establishment/operation of the school/madrasah;
  • Have students at all grade levels;
  • Have educational facilities and infrastructure;
  • Have educators and education staff;
  • Implement the applicable curriculum; and have graduated students.

The purpose of school accreditation is to provide an overview of the level of school performance that is used as a tool for coaching, developing and improving schools in terms of quality, effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and innovation.

In addition, this accreditation also provides assurance to the public that the school has been accredited and provides educational services that meet national accreditation standards.
